Make a water shutoff plan

The best time to identify a water control is before a leak. Ask a qualified provider to show which controls serve a fixture, a section, or the whole property and whether they are in working condition. Do not assume the nearest valve controls the water you are seeing.

Record the control and its limits

Keep a simple description of the location and the part of the system it serves. Note anything that needs to remain accessible. A photograph can help distinguish nearby controls, but do not publish it with keys, access codes, or private equipment details. Labeling should be accurate and understandable to the people who might need the information later.

Ask what the correct action is if a control is stuck, leaks, or cannot be reached from a dry position. Do not force it or borrow tools to turn public equipment. If a valve needs repair, put that work into an ordinary planned visit instead of waiting until another leak makes access difficult.

Know the utility route too

Gurnee publishes emergency water-shutoff instructions in its Water and Sewer FAQs. Keep the current utility contact route available separately from a private provider's number. Public curb or meter equipment is not a household control to experiment with.

Coordinate a shared building

Ask the owner or manager who authorizes a shutoff and how affected occupants are informed. A valve inside your unit may not isolate all relevant water, while a common control may interrupt other units. Record the responsible contact and access arrangements.

If water is already escaping, use the active-leak page. This planning note does not instruct you to enter a flooded room, touch electrical equipment, or manipulate a control you have not identified. A plan is useful because it removes those guesses before an incident, not because it makes every situation safe to handle alone.
