Water is leaking right now

If water is escaping from plumbing, put safe access ahead of finding the exact failed part. Move people away from the wet area, pause use of the affected fixture, and report whether the water is still spreading. A visible stream, a wet ceiling, and a puddle beside an appliance require different investigations. You do not need to settle the diagnosis before asking for help.

Start from somewhere dry

Look at the route to the leak, not only the leak itself. Water near receptacles, electrical equipment, or a service panel can make the room unsafe. Do not wade through it or reach across wet equipment. A sagging ceiling is another reason to keep clear rather than standing underneath with a bucket. Get appropriate emergency assistance for immediate danger. The referral number on this page is not an emergency-service line.

CDC safety guidance warns against using electrical devices while standing in water. Applying that boundary is more important than completing a checklist. If the leak cannot be reached safely, tell the person you contact that access is restricted. Photos and measurements can wait.

A control is useful only when you know what it controls

Some fixtures have a nearby water valve. A house may also have a main interior shutoff, but the arrangement is not identical everywhere. Operate a control only if you already know its purpose, can reach it from a dry safe position, and it moves normally. Do not force a stuck valve or experiment with unfamiliar equipment. A valve that begins leaking adds another problem to report.

If private water control is unavailable, ask the utility about the appropriate shutoff route. Gurnee publishes emergency water-shutoff contacts in its Water and Sewer FAQs. Use the current official instructions for a Village-served address. Do not enter a meter pit, use a curb key, or operate public equipment yourself. This website cannot arrange a municipal shutoff through the referral number.

Describe the water you can actually see

The first description can be plain: “A pipe under the kitchen sink is spraying,” or “water is coming through the ceiling below the bathroom.” Include when you noticed it and what was running immediately beforehand. Say whether shutting an identified water valve changed the flow. If you have not touched a valve, say that instead of implying that the source has been isolated.

Appearance is not enough to establish that water is clean or safe. If sewage is backing through a basement drain, switch to the basement sewage backup guidance. Gurnee asks residents to contact Public Works first for that situation so the Village can assess the public main. Water entering during a storm can also require drainage or flood assistance beyond a private plumbing repair.

Temporary control is not a finished repair

A provider may first concentrate on stopping water loss. Ask what that step will restore and what must remain out of use. A capped line or isolated fixture can change how the rest of the house works. Make sure everyone using the property knows about any restriction before a sink, appliance, or heater is turned back on.

Get the next step stated clearly. Does the initial visit include diagnosis and permanent repair, or only stabilization? Will a return visit require parts or another trade? Ask before assuming the first authorization covers both. When the damaged section is hidden, discuss how access will be made and who repairs the opening afterward. Plumbing repair does not automatically include wall, cabinet, or flooring restoration.

Keep one short incident record

Once you are safe, write down the discovery time, the visible location, and the actions taken. A photo from the doorway can be enough to preserve the starting condition. Keep the original image and note the time separately if needed. Do not expose personal paperwork, keys, access codes, or other household information when sending images to an unfamiliar recipient.

Ask the provider to record the source found, material repaired, and any remaining concerns on the invoice. If water reached another room or unit, tell the relevant owner or manager promptly. Save those communications with the repair record. Damage documentation explains how to separate source repair from cleanup and insurance questions without treating photographs as proof of coverage.

What the repair conversation needs

The provider will need the full address, a callback number you choose to share, the type of property, and whether someone can authorize work. Mention access limitations before a visit is arranged. A locked common mechanical room, an absent owner, or a wet electrical area can change what is possible at the property.

Ask for the business name and current Illinois plumbing license number. Confirm the charge for the first assessment, any limits on that work, and how additional work will be approved. Availability has to be confirmed with the actual company. A website telephone link alone does not reserve an arrival time or establish that a particular provider serves your address.

When the appropriate next step is a private plumbing assessment, call 877-702-1610 and explain that water is actively leaking. Gurnee Plumbing Decisions is a separate information and referral publisher. The company answering is responsible for its own work, terms, and instructions; ask for its identity before proceeding.
