Report a plumbing problem as a renter

Notify the owner or property manager promptly when plumbing changes or water escapes. Give the location, timing, and any immediate hazard. Keep a written record of the report, even if the first conversation is by phone. This page is a practical communication guide, not a statement of your legal duties or the landlord's obligations.

Information and referral guidance. For a provider call, confirm the business and address coverage. Our role.

Report the condition without authorizing beyond your role

Describe what you can see: a sink holds water, the toilet keeps refilling, or water appears below a fixture. Include whether the affected area can be safely accessed. Ask who will arrange the assessment and who may approve charges. Permission to let someone into the unit is not necessarily permission to approve a replacement or open a wall.

Do not alter shared controls, remove fixtures, or hire work against the owner's account without clear authorization. For immediate danger, leave the unsafe area and use the appropriate emergency assistance. Waiting for a routine management response should not require you to remain beside an electrical, gas, or contamination hazard.

Make access specific

Confirm the agreed appointment, the provider's identity, and how entry will occur. Share access information only through a trusted arrangement with the responsible party. Secure pets and explain any mobility or communication needs that affect the visit. Do not post keys or entry codes in a public message or send them to an unidentified call recipient.

Keep the result with the original report

Ask management what was repaired, whether any use restriction remains, and whom to contact if it returns. Save photographs taken safely and any work reference supplied. If the situation becomes a rights or habitability dispute, consult qualified local assistance rather than treating this website as legal advice.

For a Village-connected basement sewage backup, alert management to the Public Works-first guidance. The utility assessment and the owner's private repair arrangements are separate steps, even when both are needed during the same incident.
