Questions before a sewer camera inspection

A camera can show visible conditions inside an accessible line. It does not remove every blockage, inspect every branch automatically, or guarantee that the whole sewer has been evaluated. Before agreeing to a visit, ask what question the inspection is intended to answer and what access is available.

Observe.
Ask.
Decide.
Information and referral guidance. For a provider call, confirm the business and address coverage. Our role.

Define the inspected route

Ask where the camera will enter and which portion of the line the provider expects to reach. Retained water, debris, bends, or other conditions can limit visibility or progress. If clearing is needed first, determine whether it is included or separately authorized. The estimate should not imply a complete view when the route is uncertain.

If the reason for the visit is recurring trouble, provide the dates and previous reports. A recurring-drain history helps the provider connect a visible finding with the symptom rather than inspecting without a clear question.

Ask for an interpretable record

Request the recording, the inspected extent, and an explanation of any findings. If a repair location is identified, ask how that location is established and documented. An isolated still image may be hard to connect to a point on the property. Keep the explanation and location notes with the video.

Do not confuse observation with authorization

Finding a condition does not automatically authorize excavation or replacement. Ask what options address it, what permits or access are needed, and what remains uncertain. Approve additional work through a clear written scope.

For a current basement sewage backup on Gurnee's system, the Village assessment comes first. A privately scheduled camera does not replace the public-main check. Gurnee Plumbing Decisions does not operate inspection equipment, interpret a particular recording, or certify a sewer's condition; this page helps you ask for evidence you can retain and understand.
