Plan for plumbing concerns while away

Before leaving a property unattended, identify who can respond if water is seen or an alarm is received. A trusted contact needs permission, a safe access plan, and the correct utility and provider routes. Do not rely on a monitoring device alone when nobody has agreed to act.

Information and referral guidance. For a provider call, confirm the business and address coverage. Our role.

Review the equipment you actually have

Ask a qualified provider about water and heat arrangements for the house and its installed equipment. A general recommendation to shut off all water may not suit every system. Follow manufacturer instructions and account for equipment that depends on a water supply. Do not alter controls simply because another house uses a different travel routine.

If travel overlaps cold weather, review the cold-weather preparation note. A plumbing plan should not undermine the home's heat or other essential protection. Keep vulnerable locations and known unresolved repairs on the preparation list.

Give the contact a clear boundary

Explain that they should not enter standing water, touch wet electrical equipment, or force a valve. Their first job is to stay safe and report the condition. Provide the utility's current contact route and the business responsible for recent work. Store access information privately, not in a public message or on the outside of the house.

Check the alert path before departure

If a leak device is installed, confirm its normal test procedure, recipient, power, and connectivity. Make sure the contact knows which alert is being sent and what it means. A successful test is not a guarantee against an outage while you are gone.

On return, review any reported events and unusual consumption with the appropriate provider or utility. This website does not monitor the property or arrange house checks. The useful outcome is an agreed human response and equipment-specific instructions that remain available when you are not there.
